End poverty by 2015. This is the historic promise 189 world leaders made at the
United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 when they agreed to meet the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs). The United Nations Millennium Campaign supports and inspires
people from around the world to take action in support of the MDGs.

A new world record was set during October 17-19 when over 116 million people stood up worldwide against poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals. Asia had the highest numbers of 73 million, of which 14 million were from India and another 13 million from Bangladesh.

It all began in 2006 with a foot march organised by the APVVU Mandal Union to unite dalit women in southern India. Since then, displaying a relentless spirit against upper caste oppression, they have overcome all hurdles in seeking land allotments in their names.

Despite notions of excess funds for AIDS, the $10 billion in resources worldwide fell short last year. Bertil Lindblad, director, UNAIDS Office in New York says the epidemic is running strong and ahead of the global response, which for the first time, is showing results in treatment and prevention.

Centre for Legislative Research and Advocacy’s latest publication Handbook for Parliamentarians on the MDGs details existing policy on MDGs in India and provides suggestions for future direction and strategy. The book aims to sensitise public leadership on these goals to ensure their time bound delivery.
