A new report urges early infant diagnosis to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV and improve survival. Citing it as a human rights issue, it calls for increased access to HIV testing for mothers and pregnant women to help them make right informed choices.

A unisex football match for World AIDS Day brought together Nepal’s HIV-positive people and a sports mad crowd in the city of Kathmandu. Roping in celebrities to spread the message, the match was successful in tackling anti-AIDS prejudices.

Despite notions of excess funds for AIDS, the $10 billion in resources worldwide fell short last year. Bertil Lindblad, director, UNAIDS Office in New York says the epidemic is running strong and ahead of the global response, which for the first time, is showing results in treatment and prevention.

Western India sets example in tackling malnutrition

In the tribal belts of Maharashtra in western India, a high nutrition diet programme has significantly reduced mortality rates in the state. Provided jointly by two NGOs through the anganwadis, the meal for mother and child contains locally made mixture of millet, jaggery and milk.

New tool to analyse maternal deaths

Maternal deaths in India can now be audited with a new tool developed by UNICEF. Known as the Maternal and Perinatal Death Inquiry and Response (MAPEDIR), the tool can be used to find high-impact, local interventions that ensure safe deliveries.

Economic crisis no cause to cut AIDS funding to Asia

An Asian civil society body has called upon governments, donors and UN agencies to not cut back on funds towards AIDS programmes under the current economic crisis. It also draws attention to increasing inequalities, violence against women and migrations in the region that make the AIDS issue more complex.

Diarrhoea a major killer in South Asia

Diarrhoea continues to claim maximum deaths in South Asia but has often been relegated to the background at the highest policy level. The recently concluded South Asian Conference on Sanitation noted that observing hand-washing and eliminating open defecation can reduce the numbers sharply.

Kerala's Kozhikode district in southern India has pioneered effective healthcare relief via SMS. Under a government project named 'Dr. SMS', citizens can get information on their mobiles about the nearest hospitals, blood banks or speciality centres.
