A study done in Delhi's resettlement colonies in 200 schools shows that deworming programmes can be an effective health intervention in improving student participation in India. Also claimed to be highly cost-effective, these findings were first revealed in a similar study in Kenya's primary schools.

In the tribal belts of Maharashtra in western India, a high nutrition diet programme has significantly reduced mortality rates in the state. Provided jointly by two NGOs through the anganwadis, the meal for mother and child contains locally made mixture of millet, jaggery and milk.

New tool to analyse maternal deaths

Maternal deaths in India can now be audited with a new tool developed by UNICEF. Known as the Maternal and Perinatal Death Inquiry and Response (MAPEDIR), the tool can be used to find high-impact, local interventions that ensure safe deliveries.

Total sanitation in rural India still a far cry

Financial incentives and awareness programmes to promote safe sanitation have not really changed old habits in India. A study done by a Delhi based NGO reveals that practice of open defecation continues due to lack of maintenance of toilets and poor social mobilisation.

Kerala's Kozhikode district in southern India has pioneered effective healthcare relief via SMS. Under a government project named 'Dr. SMS', citizens can get information on their mobiles about the nearest hospitals, blood banks or speciality centres.
