Foreign workers in the gulf region fear to get tested for HIV as that means instant deportation. Discriminated by authorities, the migrant labourers are not allowed to buy antiretroviral drugs and are often threatened with lethal injections to force them return home.

Western India sets example in tackling malnutrition

In the tribal belts of Maharashtra in western India, a high nutrition diet programme has significantly reduced mortality rates in the state. Provided jointly by two NGOs through the anganwadis, the meal for mother and child contains locally made mixture of millet, jaggery and milk.

Maternal deaths in India can now be audited with a new tool developed by UNICEF. Known as the Maternal and Perinatal Death Inquiry and Response (MAPEDIR), the tool can be used to find high-impact, local interventions that ensure safe deliveries.

Bird flu scare in three Indian states
In a bid to contain the deadly bird flu virus from spreading further, veterinary workers are culling thousands of chickens and ducks in eastern India. According to World Health Organisation the virus has killed more than 200 people in a dozen countries since it resurfaced in Asia in 2003.
