Gender equality is explicitly mentioned only in two of the eight MDGs, but in reality, it is an over-arching and crosscutting concern that can enhance performance on every other indicator of human development.
The goals of Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in the MDGs can be seen as opportunities for mainstreaming women's concerns and perspectives in development, by identifying synergies amongst the MDGs, the Beijing Platform for Action, and other international and national commitments. Also, working towards social, political and economic empowerment of disadvantaged groups of women and men in a holistic manner is important for achieving the goals.

Three women from Nepal, Iraq and Palestine were honoured by the Gruber Foundation with the 2008 Women’s Right Prize for their fight against inequality in their respective countries. Sapana Pradhan Malla has been challenging Nepal’s patriarchal mindset by pushing women’s issues in the new constitution.

Hundreds of students, teachers and activists marched in a recent nationwide rally in India organised by the human rights body to demand access to safe education. The event was part of its ongoing campaign to ensure appropriate
legal frameworks for creating a violence-free environment for girls in schools.

Despite laws in place with regard to workplace sexual harassment in India, pursuit of justice can still be a long haul. A recent Bombay High Court judgment against a private sector company in a case of a woman employee provides a flicker of hope, says columnist Kalpana Sharma.
