18-11-2008 A study done in Delhi's resettlement colonies in 200 schools shows that deworming programmes can be an effective health intervention in improving student participation in India. Also claimed to be highly cost-effective, these findings were first revealed in a similar study in Kenya's primary schools.

  • Western India sets example in tackling malnutrition
    08-10-2008 In the tribal belts of Maharashtra in western India, a high nutrition diet programme has significantly reduced mortality rates in the state. Provided jointly by two NGOs through the anganwadis, the meal for mother and child contains locally made mixture of millet, jaggery and milk.
 
  • New tool to analyse maternal deaths
    14-10-2008 Maternal deaths in India can now be audited with a new tool developed by UNICEF. Known as the Maternal and Perinatal Death Inquiry and Response (MAPEDIR), the tool can be used to find high-impact, local interventions that ensure safe deliveries.

    19-09-2008 They are the HIV positive wives and widows of intravenous drug users, going public about their status. The Manipur Network of Positive People in northeast India is supporting these brave women in generating awareness on the stigma and discrimination attached to the disease, and themselves.

    21-11-2008 Women in a village about 200 km from the Indian capital are no longer embarrassed to talk about menstrual hygiene. An innovative idea of distributing low-cost sanitary napkins as part of the rural sanitation campaign is bringing about significant attitudinal change and awareness on safe disposal of waste.
