Goal 7 specifies the international commitment to ensuring environmental sustainability, by targeting the reversing of loss of environmental resources, halving the proportion of people without sanitation and sustainable access to safe drinking water by 2015, and achieving significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by 2020. Progress towards this goal is measured by factors such as the proportion of land area covered by forests, extent of protected areas for maintaining biological diversity, energy efficiency (in terms of GDP per unit of energy use), per capita carbon dioxide emissions, and also the proportion of the population with access to improved drinking water, sanitation, and secure tenure.

Man-made atmospheric brown clouds fed by black carbon and soot are masking Asian cities and causing glacial melting and extreme weather events, says the latest UNEP report. These clouds containing toxic particles and carcinogens risk the health and livelihoods of three billion people, warn scientists.

A new report compiled jointly by environmental groups has warned of increased human-elephant conflict across the region due to large-scale infrastructure projects. It talks of devising strategy for peaceful coexistence leading to both economic and conservation gains in the region.

Corruption in water sector threatens development

A report by Transparency International points out that corruption in water sector undermines the global response to climate change and food shortages. Though a fundamental governance problem, the issue has not been sufficiently addressed in policy initiatives on environmental sustainability and energy security.

Cyclone-hit Myanmar monasteries need repair

Cyclone Nargis had destroyed hundreds of monasteries that played an important social, cultural, educational and religious role in Myanmar. Many of them are in urgent need of repair and other assistance so as to make these institutions resume their work.

Food and Agricultural Organization’s new publication: The State of Food and Agriculture 2008 says the recent growth in biofuel production is seriously impacting the food security of the world. It argues that biofuels are necessary but appropriate policies and investments need to be put in place.
