Education is the backbone of national development and is widely accepted as an instrument of social change. India has been an active partner in the worldwide movement for education for All that began in 1990 in Jomtien followed by Millennium development goals. The important issues which need immediate attention to achieve MDG targets in Education are as follow.

Nearly 40,000 girls will be kept out of schools in the Swat valley if a ban by militants takes effect from Januray 15 on grounds that they do not abide by the teachings of Islam. Educationists fear the Taliban’s threats will undo all progress made in educating girls.

A network of youth volunteers that imparts education to slum children in three cities of India has won the Ashoka Youth Social Entrepreneur Award for this year. Make A Difference or MAD as it is known now plans to spread its work to 21 more cities.

With their little green laptops, students in Nepal now find their English and Math lessons more interactive. Facilitated by Open Learning Nepal with support from a Danish group, the innovative exercise is less about gadgets and more about quality education in developing countries.

Despite the efforts to improve access to education, inequalities are still entrenched around the globe, notes UNESCO’s latest Education For All Global Monitoring Report 2009. Amidst declining aid flows and weak domestic policies, the report calls for linking education planning with poverty reduction strategies.
